Jonathan J. Gottlieb
Jonathan (J.J.) received his B.A. from University of California, Berkeley in Classical Archaeology. He studied for a Master’s degree in Maritime Civilizations, at the University of Haifa, with an emphasis on marine archaeology. Completed an M.A. in Conservation Studies, Dept. of Archaeology, University of Haifa, researching ancient lime-based mortars. While studying at Berkeley, J.J. worked on restoration of Middle Kingdom (Egypt) pottery and joined the UC Berkeley expedition at Tel Dor. J.J. has since worked on numerous excavations, both on land and underwater, was the head photographer for the Joint Caesarea Expedition from 1994 to 1999, and worked at the Haifa Museum of Ancient Art and at the Hecht Museum.
Since 2001 J.J. is the conservator/restorator of the Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies, heading the Laboratory for the Conservation of Waterlogged, Organic, Archaeological materials and the Pottery Restoration Lab. Other duties include preparing slides for micro-morphological analysis (petrography), photography, technical assistant for the Maritime Civ. woodworking course, assisting researchers and students, and generally solving problems (and sometimes creating a few).
