Dr. Ehud Galili

Dr. Ehud Galili received his MA from the University of Haifa and PhD from Tel Aviv university. Currently he is an underwater archaeologist, lecturer and researcher at the Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies and the Department of Maritime Civilizations at the University of Haifa. His activities focus on the study of man and sea relations along the coasts of Israel, and rescue and management of remnants left by the maritime civilizations. His research interests cover 10,000 years of human activity in Israel seas and inland waters, from the Neolithic period to the 20th century, including: Neolithic villages inundated by the sea, shipwrecks and their cargoes, ports and anchorages, salt producing plants and other coastal rock-cut installations, sea-level changes and tectonic activity along the Israeli coasts, the development of anchors, fishing gear, instruments used by mariners, and mariners’ cultic objects, ancient metal trade and metal cargoes along the Israeli coast and Crusader fortifications and quarries in Atlit. He founded the marine archaeology unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority and managed it (1990-2004). He participated in the formation and legislation of the Law for the Protection of the coastal Environment and has been serving as a member in the national committee for the Protection of the coastal Environment since its establishment (2004-2021). He was honored by the Israel Defense Forces for locating and bringing to burial the crew of a missing Mosquito plane lost at sea. In addition, he was honored by the Italian organization “Brothers of the Sea” and by the “Accademia Internazionale di Scienze e Tecniche Subacquee”, and was rewarded with the “Golden Trident” for his contribution to the discovery of the crew of the Italian submarine Scire’ and help in their repatriation. He was also awarded by the Israeli Federation for Diving for hid contribution to underwater archaeology in Israel. He took part in formulating the National Policy Papers: Israel’s Coastal Waters (1999); the National Policy Paper for protecting the coastal cliffs of Israel (2014), the Policy Paper of the Nature and Parks Authority for the coastal environment and national marine parks (2011), the National Policy Program for the marine territories of Israel (2015-2019) and risk assessments, rescue programs and policy documents for ancient Ashkelon, Apolonia, Caesarea, Dor, Atlit and Akko, of behalf of the IAA. As a member of the “Blue and Green” environmental association in the Carmel coast, he co-planned the Kurkar Ridge Trail of Atlit, and published a guide book for the trail, he prepared a conservation master plan for the heritage sites in Atlit region and he is a part of team currently preparing the Sea-Trail of Israel.
