Dr. Yigal Sitry

Appointment period: 1/6/2023 – 31/5/2026

My main interest is in ancient technology of woodworking. My Ph.D. thesis – Woodworking Objects from Roman Sites in the Land of Israel – Typological and Technological Study, was  written under the supervision of the late prof. Hanan Eshel in the Martin (Szusz) Department of the Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University.

Recently I engaged with three major fields:

  • Study of the wooden objects – in this route I researched and published several papers on the wood objects found in sites in Israel, such as Ma’agan Michael wreck, Shivta, Kuntilet ‘Ajrud, sites along the Incense Road and lately Yotvata. The study focuses on identification of the objects and the typological and technological aspects. More recently I study three major sites Qumran, Caves of Wadi Muraba’at (with collaboration of prof. Simcha Lev-Yadun) and Masada.
  • Study of the development of the woodworking technology – in this field I engage more recently with the technology of woodturning. Further plans in this field are the technology of the production of combs for delousing and its influenced on the hygiene of the head in the Roman Era and finely Woodworking while standing, the late and last revolution in woodworking and its influence on this trade in the western culture.
  • Development of Technology and Design – I am studying this topic for many years especially the development of woodworking technology and its influence on the design of furniture and daily life objects in antiquity.
