Dr. Sina C. Lehnig

Appointment period: 1/10/2022 – 30/09/2025

Sina Clara Lehnig received her BA and MA in Archaeology from the University of Cologne. For her PhD at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, she was awarded the prestigious travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute, which allowed her to spend half a year visiting archaeological sites throughout the Mediterranean and Africa, gaining extensive knowledge of Mediterranean archaeology and beyond. As a member of ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites), she is involved in the field of cultural preservation and world heritage.

Chronologically, her research focuses on Roman Antiquity, the transition to Late Antiquity, and the Early Islamic period. In her current project, she investigates the settlement history of the hitherto almost unexplored settlement of Mitzpe Shivta in the central Negev Desert. Together with Guy Bar-Oz and Gil Gambash she explores the settlement’s role in the late antique agricultural florescence and decline of the desert region and in the formation of early monasticism, pilgrimage and Christianity. Hereby, the team applies a broad range of documantary and analytical methods ranging from SfM, over bio- and geoarchaeology and epigraphy. Currently, Sina Lehnig is supported by the Max Planck Society, Minerva Stiftung für die Forschung.
